Rose

Shopping with Lucas was surprisingly fun even if I wasn’t in the mood for company. He’s taken my focus off Ben for a little while. Firn has since gone back home and told me last night that there was no sign of the bear, whether it be his footprints or anything left at the door. I hope he’s okay. It’s been over a week since we saw Ben and I thought he would at least send us some sign that he’s okay. Maybe we were just a blip in time for him, just a place to crash. He’s probably moved on, broke the curse and found his mate. My heart hurts with this thought. I push it aside and concentrate on getting the shop ready to open.

I’m interviewing staff today. It’s grueling. So far, no one has any experience in botany, floral arrangement, or gardening. Even a person who’s received flowers in their lifetime would be welcome right now. Looking at my watch, I notice my last applicant is late.

The bell rings to alert me someone has opened the door to the store. I glance to the front and am surprised to see Lucas there.

“Hi, Rose. Sorry, we’re late. I had a meeting go late and I was her only ride today.” I see a young woman with Lucas, probably his sister by their similarities. She’s tall as well, with the same angular facial features and eyes. They must have great genes in their family. Looking down at the applicant, I notice her name now: Lizzy Hound. I pop my forehead with my palm. Why didn’t I pay attention to that? Probably because I was thinking about Ben.

Getting up from my desk, I greet them. “Hi, Lucas, Lizzy. It’s very nice to meet you.” I hold out my hand to Lizzy and she quickly takes it, squeezing it a little hard. My hand aches but she unclasps it quickly. I pull it away and hold my throbbing hand.

“Sorry, I’m nervous.” Lizzy looks apologetic. Her and Lucas are very strong. He single-handedly moved all the new furniture upstairs the other day without difficulty. I nod, accepting her apology. I remember my first interview when I worked at the grocery store. I was nervous as hell and could hardly make eye contact with the manager.

“It’s okay,” I tell her. “I remember my first interview really well, and let’s just say that I wish I could forget it.” This seems to put her at ease.

“I hope it’s okay that my sister is applying here. I knew this would be a good opportunity for her and you needed someone you could count on. However, I don’t want you to feel any pressure to hire her.” I appreciate that, but regardless I feel pressured to hire her since he did help me find this property and helped me with the furniture upstairs. I keep an open mind and shoo him away with my hand so I can do the interview. Lucas laughs and says he’ll wait outside.
